Now that you know a bit about us, we can dive into the trip! We’re a month in now, but a lot has happened in those 4 weeks...
Prior to our departure from Alberta, we left Edmonton on January 28, 2017. That morning, Bonita's family threw a little shindig to send us off. Hosted by B’s sister Teresa, the party was full of balloons, inspirational travel quotes, parent speeches and some our favorite dishes: perogies, Tropika skewers, naan, Sam Wok soup, and the ultimate cherry cheesecake via Shirley (Bonita's mom). Teresa also put together a sweet keynotes quiz to test our knowledge of the 50 states. Turns out we need to learn more...good thing we'll be spending lots of time exploring.
Sadly, we also had to temporarily part ways to our little cat Graycie. We had every intention of bringing her with us until recently. We had a spot for her litter, a space cat carrier bag, and all the paperwork sorted out to get her across the border. We even had her semi-leash trained! However, as our departure date loomed the reality of the difficulties of travelling with a cat set in. We discussed at length the pros and cons of taking her but ultimately decided that the spontaneity of the trip would be lost and it just wouldn’t be an ideal situation for her or for us. Luckily Bonita’s mom and trusty companion Quentin stepped in to save the day, so she’ll be well looked after and happy while we are away, though we miss her every day.
We set out southwards, but didn’t get too far. We stopped in for a few days to visit the LaGrange acreage to say our goodbyes and do some last minute additions to the van in the much coveted heated garage. After a few days of working on the van (and a couple rounds of Catan) we were ready. Sunday, December 31, 2017: New Year's Eve and it was a cold one for sure (-30 degrees celsius) but road conditions looked good: this was our chance!
At dawn the LaGrange clan shuffled out to the garage sleepy eyed with mimosas in hand. The night before we had stayed up late drinking and playing board games, but everyone dutifully showed up for one last cheers before we set off. Hugs, kisses and tears were aplenty, as were the well wishes as we pulled out of the garage and drove towards our first destination: Vancouver!
